Crime reduction efforts in Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal have gained significant traction, positively impacting the lives of thousands of people.
Violent crimes and burglaries, which have long been a cause for concern, are now showing a decline, thanks to the proactive measures implemented by the Newcastle SAPS.
Under the leadership of Acting Station Commander Colonel Vusumuzi Radebe, the Newcastle Police have officially acknowledged a notable decrease in contact crimes, including assaults, murders, and armed robberies.
“Although April presented challenges, we observed a steady decline in contact crimes throughout May and June”, told Colonel Radebe.
This encouraging trend in reducing murder cases and other violent crimes can be attributed to a series of ongoing operations diligently carried out by the police force.
“We conduct high density operations four times a week, in addition to our daily operations,” explained Colonel Radebe, emphasising the commitment to maintaining a strong police presence.
During these high density operations, officers from the eleven police stations in the Amajuba District join forces in Newcastle to augment the existing police force. This collaborative effort ensures increased police visibility, effectively covering large areas of the town and facilitating the identification and apprehension of criminals.
Colonel Radebe highlighted that immediate confiscation of dangerous weapons, such as knives, takes place when individuals are found in possession of them.
“People are being robbed in the streets by individuals armed with knives and other weapons. We are actively reducing this threat by minimising the availability of such weapons,” explained the Colonel. This seizure of weapons has had a significant impact on reducing the number of murders and attempted murders.
The success of these police operations is evident, as Colonel Radebe proudly announced a remarkable 30% decline in violent crimes.
Furthermore, law enforcement remains steadfast in their commitment to further reducing these cases and restoring law and order to Newcastle. However, the Acting Station Commander stressed that alcohol plays a significant role in contributing to violent crimes, including murder, attempted murder, assault, and domestic violence.
In addition to the decline in violent crimes, Colonel Radebe highlighted a steady decrease in the number of burglaries in recent weeks.
“We have observed a drop of approximately 50% in burglary cases,” he affirmed.
However, he acknowledged that specific suburbs in Newcastle still pose challenges, including Aviary Hill, Pioneer Park, Sunnyridge, and Hutten Heights.
Addressing these concerns, Colonel Radebe explained, “We closely monitor crime trends and operate in these areas during times when crimes are most likely to occur, which has proven effective in reducing the number of burglaries.”
While recognising the dedication of law enforcement, Colonel Radebe further emphasised that the police cannot claim victory alone.
“We have established partnerships with private security companies, who actively support us. The CPF (Community Policing Forum) is also heavily involved,” he added.
Colonel Radebe highlighted that the CPF and security officials provide valuable manpower, patrolling alongside the police to gradually push back against criminal activities.
