Slindile Nkosi, a 38-year-old woman, has been sentenced to life imprisonment for masterminding the murder of her husband, Sthembiso Shabangu, a former prison warder. Her motive, driven by greed, was to cash in on her husband’s life insurance policies.
The sinister crime came to light when a life insurance agent unwittingly became involved in Nkosi’s plan, leading to its unravelling.
Amajuba District Detective Sergeant Sibusiso Kunene reflected on the case, explaining how Nkosi’s scheme was exposed.
According to Sergeant Kunene, on 21 May 2021, Shabangu was at his home in Osizweni with his best friend and three others when three hitmen entered the house.
“The men ordered everyone to lie down, but Shabangu, due to a spinal injury, could not comply. The hitmen then asked for Shabangu’s identity,” Sergeant Kunene began.
Upon confirming his identity, Shabangu was fatally shot by the hitmen. They also shot his best friend, Mlungisis Manana, before fleeing the scene.
Following Shabangu’s death, Nkosi proceeded to the Metropolitan Life Insurance offices to claim her deceased husband’s life insurance policies. However, her plans started to crumble at that moment.
“Shabangu had cancelled one of his policies in January, just months before the murder. There were three other active life insurance policies,” Detective Kunene revealed.
He further explained that Nkosi was unaware that her husband had cancelled one of his policies. Because of this, when she raised queries about the life insurance policies, they were red flagged, prompting her to approach a Metropolitan agent to assist in removing the red flags.
During her interaction with the insurance agent, Nkosi befriended the woman and revealed her involvement in hiring the hitmen to kill her husband. She also disclosed her intentions to have her husband’s uncle and cousin murdered, so that she could enjoy the money without their suspicions.
Realising the gravity of the situation, the agent arranged another meeting with Nkosi and secretly recorded their conversation, capturing Nkosi discussing her actions and plans regarding her husband’s relatives. The agent then shared the recording with Shabangu’s uncle.
Sergeant Kunene explained that Nkosi subsequently began planning the agent’s murder to prevent the police from being notified.
However, it was too late, as the SAPS already had knowledge of the case, resulting in Nkosi’s arrest.
Due to the heinous nature of the crime, Nkosi appeared before the Pietermaritzburg High Court, where she was recently sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of her husband and life imprisonment for the murder of his best friend.
The sentencing was the result of the diligent work of the Amajuba District Task Team, who dedicated hours to gathering overwhelming evidence against Nkosi.
Sergeant Kunene revealed that during the investigation, the court learned that the assassination attempt on Shabangu’s life was not the first that Nkosi had made.
“She first tried to poison him using black magic muthi. When that failed, she arranged a new vehicle for him, planning to have it hijacked and him killed. However, Shabangu did not drive the car, and that’s when she hired the hitmen,” Sergeant Kunene disclosed.
Shockingly, all three hitmen involved in Shabangu’s murder were killed. While an investigation into their deaths is ongoing, there are speculations that Nkosi orchestrated their killings as well.
