A man was stabbed in the neck during an altercation that arose over a dispute about cigarettes. The victim, who is currently in recovery, found himself in a perilous situation after a routine trip to a shop in KwaMathukuza, Newcastle.
According to Lizzy Arumugam, the spokesperson for Newcastle SAPS, the incident occurred after the victim went to purchase cigarettes.
It was during this time that two men approached him, requesting a cigarette from his pack. In a gesture of goodwill, the victim handed over his pack, expecting them to help themselves. However, things quickly spiraled out of control as the two men refused to return the cigarettes.
Realising the situation could escalate further, the victim attempted to leave the scene. Regrettably, this decision proved to be ill-fated. “The complainant left them, and one suspect followed him and stabbed him in his neck,” revealed Arumugam.
Following the attack, the two perpetrators fled the scene, leaving the injured victim in need of urgent medical attention.
Local law enforcement was immediately contacted to investigate the incident. Through diligent detective work, they were able to track down the suspect responsible for the stabbing.
The suspect has since been arrested and now faces charges of attempted murder. He is scheduled to appear in the Newcastle Magistrate Court to answer for his actions. As the legal proceedings commence, Arumugam assured the public that thorough police investigations will continue to ensure that justice is served.
