Neighbour sentenced to life for brutal crimes against kids

Murder of Elderly Couple Petrus (86) and Cornelia (79) Erasmus in Colenso Sees SAPS Searching for Answers

After an agonising three-year wait, justice has finally been served for two young girls. As per reports, the girls’ lives were shattered by the savage actions of their 25-year-old neighbour, Mxolisi Mxoli Buthelezi.

According to Lizzy Arumugam, spokesperson for Newcastle SAPS, the horrifying incident took place on 4 October 2020.

Constable FV Langa from the Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit was dispatched to a residence in Osizweni in response to a reported case of attempted murder and rape.

Upon Constable Langa’s arrival, a gruesome scene awaited, with a 17-year-old and a 10-year-old girl revealed as the victims of a brutal attack.

During the subsequent interview conducted by the investigating officer with the 17-year-old girl, Arumugam explained that it was uncovered that she had been at home with her 10-year-old niece when a man residing a few houses away launched a violent assault on them.

“The suspect raped the 10-year-old girl and repeatedly stabbed the 17-year-old girl,” stated Arumugam.

Buthelezi, who was 22 years old at the time, was swiftly apprehended by Constable Langa, thanks to the victims’ unwavering identification of him despite the harrowing experience they had endured.

With the suspect in custody and the FCS Unit successfully opposing his bail, a thorough investigation ensued.

Thanks to the diligent work of the police, Arumugam confirmed that the case reached its conclusion recently, with the Madadeni Regional Court imposing a life sentence on Buthelezi. He was charged with rape, in addition to an extra 10 years for the charge of attempted murder.
