The Newcastle SAPS told Newcastilllian News that it had noticed an increase in sporadic burglaries throughout the town. Over the past week and a half, approximately 10 burglary cases were reported to the SAPS in various areas. These areas include Fernwood, Fairleigh, Ncandu Park, Lennoxton, Pioneer Park, Sunnyridge, Signal Hill, and Aviary Hill.
Furthermore, Lizzy Arumugam, spokesperson for the Newcastle SAPS, pointed out that there are no specific hotspots identified as the burglaries are occurring across different parts of the town.
In light of the recent surge in burglaries, Arumugam emphasised the role of loadshedding and winter conditions, which provide an opportunity for criminals to exploit the cover of darkness.
Ghafoor stated, “Burglaries tend to increase during winter, particularly in the early hours of the morning around 2 am when people are fast asleep.”
He also acknowledged the impact of loadshedding, as criminals can take advantage of the darkness to enter properties without being noticed by potential witnesses.
Arumugam advised residents to be proactive and take necessary measures to protect their homes. She provided the following guidelines to minimise the risk of burglary:
- Ensure all doors and gates are securely locked, and windows are properly closed before leaving your residence.
- Foster good relationships with neighbours to collectively keep an eye on each other’s homes.
- Keep valuable items out of sight and secure tools that could be used to access your property.
- Consider installing timers for interior lights and motion-activated or solar lights outside.
- Close curtains and blinds, and avoid displaying valuable possessions.
- Keep garage doors and garden sheds locked.
- Store keys away from windows and remove them from doors when leaving.
- Report any suspicious activity immediately.
Arumugam further encouraged residents to report burglary incidents to the SAPS. This allows the police to investigate the matter and monitor the affected suburbs effectively.
