The Newcastle Municipality officially started the final countdown for the discontinuation of outdated prepaid electricity meters. If you haven’t upgraded your system yet, now is the time to take action to avoid any disruptions to your electricity supply.
Back in January 2023, Newcastillian News reported that all prepayment meters in Newcastle, as well as across South Africa, would stop dispensing electricity from 24th November 2024.
The Newcastle Municipality issued a notice, explaining that each meter needs to be reset by entering two special tokens before November 2024.
Recognising the importance of this initiative in reducing electricity distribution losses and improving revenue collection, the Newcastle Municipality said that it had taken a proactive approach, launching the project in February 2023.
After months of hard work, the project to upgrade the prepaid meters has now concluded, and the deadline is fast approaching.
Cllr Bertie Meiring, representing the Newcastle Municipality, told Newcastillian News that two technicians have been retained to assist residents who hadn’t upgraded their meters yet.
To ensure a smooth process, residents are advised to contact Sifiso Ngobese at 072 705 2175 via WhatsApp or phone calls to schedule an appointment for the necessary meter upgrade.
It is essential for residents to take action before November 2024 to prevent any inconvenience caused by the disconnection of outdated municipal prepayment meters.

After the upgrade of my prepaid electrical meter , I noticed the following: a R1000 purchase of electrical units last only seven days.
Why?
I think the municipality increased the price per unit inorder to provide free electricity to those refusing to pay, this is unfair, unethical and incorrect.
