The Madadeni Court has sentenced a 46-year-old man to two life sentences based on a teenage girl’s suicide note.
The Newcastle SAPS Communications Unit explains that the Newcastle Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit, led by Sergeant TP Mdluli, secured the sentencing on Monday, May 29, 2023.
“The accused, arrested and charged in June 2020, raped his two nieces multiple times,” clarifies the Newcastle SAPS Communications Unit.
Over a period of four years, the uncle raped one niece, starting when she was 13 years old. The second niece, aged six, was raped several times over two years.
“In June 2020, the older girl left a suicide note to her parents, explaining her reasons for taking her own life. She had previously attempted suicide without revealing why. In the suicide note, she expressed her parents’ failure to notice the changes in her behavior and her declining school marks,” shares the Newcastle SAPS Communications Unit.
After discovering the suicide note and preventing the 17-year-old from carrying out her plan, the police opened a case. Sergeant Mdluli from the Newcastle FCS conducted a thorough investigation, leading to the conclusion of the protracted court proceedings. The man now faces two consecutive life sentences in prison.
As the perpetrator confronts the prospect of spending several years behind bars, the SAPS encourages parents to remain attentive to their children’s behaviour and academic performance, fostering open lines of communication.
