Low-level poaching and resource constraints pose significant challenges for Chelmsford Nature Reserve, a beloved destination for Newcastillians, fishing enthusiasts, and nature lovers who enjoy camping.
However, recent allegations have cast a shadow over the reserve, suggesting all is not well.
Three individuals voiced their distress about the deteriorating state of the reserve. A concerned businessman shared his experience of attempting to book a chalet at Chelmsford, only to discover that the facilities had been closed.
Moreover, a Newcastle resident who visited the reserve recently expressed dismay at the dire condition of the chalets and the lack of cleanliness.
Another resident, echoed the sentiment, emphasising the need for urgent attention to both the facility itself and the welfare of the wildlife. They noted a decline in animal sightings, particularly among zebras and other active species.
Responding to these concerns, Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, the overseeing authority, reassured the public that Chelmsford Nature Reserve remains open to visitors and confirmed the presence of animals on-site.
Pravin Pillay, the Regional Manager of West Conservation Operations, clarified, “Neither the camp nor the game park at Chelmsford is closed.” He acknowledged the challenges faced by the protected area, attributing them to resource and financial constraints. Pillay emphasized that Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife is actively addressing these issues.
Additionally, Pillay acknowledged the presence of a low-level poaching problem in the protected area, stating that it is being addressed. He highlighted the significance of Chelmsford Nature Reserve as an important grasslands ecosystem, home to species such as oribi, wildebeest, and zebra.
Pillay encouraged community members to support the reserve through physical assistance or other initiatives, underscoring the various programs offered by Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife.
