Armed robbery unfolds during attempted sexual encounter in Newcastle CBD

A strange incident unfolded in Newcastle Central on Wednesday morning, May 17, 2023. What was intended to be a sexual encounter turned into an armed robbery, prompting a significant police response.

Amajuba Street, located just off Paterson Street, became the focal point of a criminal act. A man was apprehended for attempting to rob a group of women in their residence.

According to an official police source at the scene, the man persuaded one of the women to engage in sexual activity with him. However, upon entering the house, the suspect brandished a firearm, coercing all the women to gather in one area.

As he attempted to seize their cellphones, one of the women managed to flee the premises and promptly called for assistance. The remaining women also raised an alarm, causing the perpetrator to panic and attempt to flee.

Fortunately, his escape was short lived, as law enforcement agencies swiftly responded to the distress call. Local security company Magenta, the Newcastle Crime Fighter Task Team, the Newcastle K9 Unit, and additional SAPS units converged on the scene, apprehending the suspect on Bird Street.

Furthermore, law enforcement authorities successfully recovered the stolen items. This included the firearm used in the commission of the crime.

With the suspect now in police custody, an ongoing investigation will be conducted to gather further evidence and establish the full extent of the incident.
