Residents of Newcastle, Dannhauser, and Utrecht are hopeful for improved service delivery in the coming weeks as the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Government shifts its focus to the Amajuba District.

This decision emerged from the ordinary meeting of the Provincial Executive Council, led by Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube, on Wednesday, 10 May 2023.

The Executive Council addressed key issues in the state of the province and made resolutions, placing particular emphasis on the Amajuba District, which encompasses Newcastle, Utrecht, and Dannhauser.

In an official statement, the KZN Provincial Government announced, “The Executive Council will hold the Operation Sukuma Sakhe Cabinet Day in Amajuba District Municipality on Wednesday, 31 May 2023. The objective is to enhance public participation while assessing service delivery progress and the implementation of various programs aimed at improving the lives of communities in different wards.”

Acknowledging the challenges faced by residents in the district, the Provincial Government highlighted the following issues:

  • A decline in business activity due to Covid-19
  • Loadshedding
  • Water challenges
  • Unemployment
  • Crime related to alcohol abuse, drugs, and gang violence

With the upcoming Operation Sukuma Sakhe initiative in the Amajuba District, the Provincial Government stated, “The event will also be used to address and overcome obstacles that hinder effective service delivery to communities.”

Furthermore, the Operation Sukuma Sakhe program will be implemented in a more impactful manner, aiming to deliver visible improvements in the lives of communities through practical interventions.

Concurrently, Newcastle Municipality Mayor, Cllr Xolani Dube, recently engaged with the business sector at the Newcastle Council Chambers as part of his IDP/PMS/Budget consultation meetings.

While specific details about the meeting were not disclosed, the Newcastle Municipality’s Communications Unit shared, “The purpose of the meeting is to provide an opportunity for the municipality and industry leaders to discuss progressive strategies to propel Newcastle towards its 2035 vision of becoming a vibrant city.”

As the Provincial Government focuses on the Amajuba District and the Newcastle Municipality strives to transform Newcastle into a thriving community, residents and stakeholders eagerly anticipate the positive outcomes of these initiatives.
