Police arrest man with illegal shotgun and ammunition

Police have arrested a 30-year-old man who was found in possession of a high-powered firearm and 16 rounds of ammunition.

The arrest was made during an intelligence-driven operation by the Osizweni Policing area, with assistance from Osizweni Crime Prevention members.

The team of officers targeted a house in the Sigodiphola area of Osizweni on Tuesday night, 9 May 2023, following up on information regarding illegal firearms and ammunition.

According to Newcastle SAPS spokesperson Lizzy Arumugam, the officers found the suspect with a shotgun and 16 live rounds of 12-bore ammunition, with an estimated value of R13,000.

Arumugam confirmed that the man was arrested for being in possession of an illegal firearm and rounds. The seized firearm and ammunition will be used as evidence in the case.

The arrested man is expected to appear before the Madadeni Magistrate’s Court to face charges related to the possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition.

The Newcastle SAPS urged anyone with information about illegal firearms and ammunition to come forward and report it to the police.
