The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) has embarked on a strike at Sumitomo Rubber SA’s Dunlop tyre manufacturing factory in Ladysmith.

According to NUMSA, the strike is a result of members being fed up with alleged frustrations caused by the executive management of the company.

NUMSA is demanding the suspension of the factory’s CEO, head of Human Resources, and production coordinator, pending a disciplinary hearing for allegedly undermining the union. Additionally, the union is calling for the immediate reinstatement of the 12 by 2-hour shift system.

“This is an indefinite strike until all our demands are met,” stated NUMSA in a press release.
