A seemingly kind act of offering a ride to hitchhikers turned into a harrowing ordeal for a woman who was hijacked and shoved into the boot of her own vehicle.

The incident occurred on Saturday morning, 15 April 2023, in the Vryheid area when the woman stopped to pick up three hitchhikers at the Blood River crossing where the R33 and R34 roads intersect.

According to an official police source, the men initially told the woman that they were headed towards Dundee, KwaZulu-Natal.

However, once the woman began driving, one of the men pulled out a firearm and forced her to pull over. The terrified woman was then forcibly placed in the boot of her car, as the men drove off in her vehicle.

But fate had other plans for the hijackers. The police explained that the vehicle’s clutch plate burned out, rendering the car immobile. The men were forced to push the vehicle into a nearby farm, where their luck ran out.

Fortunately, the woman managed to seek help from the farm employees, who promptly notified the police. The men, meanwhile, had managed to hitch a ride with a truck, but the farm employees decided to follow the truck and alert the police.

“When the police arrived, all three suspects were caught and identified by the woman. Her cellphone and cash that were taken from her were also recovered,” said the police.

The Kingsley SAPS, located in the Vryheid area, took the men into custody, and further investigations will be conducted.

This incident serves as a reminder of the risks associated with picking up hitchhikers, as well as the unpredictable nature of fate.

It also highlights the importance of vigilance and seeking help in dangerous situations.
