Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal police are actively searching for three men who robbed a local store located at the Old Mutual Arcade, stealing approximately R80,000 worth of stock.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, April 18, 2023, when two men entered the store pretending to be customers. One of the men requested assistance from a staff member to try on a pair of sneakers. However, things quickly took a dark turn.

According to an official police source, a third suspect entered the store and joined the other two accomplices. “The third suspect pulled out a firearm, and the men forced the staff member back into the storeroom,” stated the police source. Despite the staff member’s attempt to resist, the robbers threatened to kill him, and he was subdued.

The perpetrators then proceeded to steal sneakers and cellphones from the store. The police source revealed that the robbers took 10 pairs of sneakers with an estimated value of R15,000, as well as 10 new cellphones and a second-hand cellphone with a combined value of R65,000.

After tying up the staff member with cable ties, the robbers fled the scene. The victim managed to free himself and contacted the property owner for assistance, who then alerted the Newcastle SAPS.

As of now, no arrests have been made, and the police are conducting an intensive investigation into the matter.

The Newcastle SAPS is urging anyone with information regarding this incident to come forward and assist with the investigation. The police are appealing to the public for cooperation in identifying and apprehending the suspects.

This robbery serves as a reminder for businesses to remain vigilant and implement necessary security measures to protect their staff and stock. Anyone with information related to this incident is urged to contact the Newcastle SAPS or report anonymously to Crime Stop at 08600 10111.
