Amajuba District Municipality investigates employee following fatal collision

An employee of the Amajuba District Municipality is under investigation following a fatal collision that occurred on Friday, 17 March 2023, just outside of Dannhauser, near Osizweni. The crash resulted in the death of one person and serious injuries to another.

The circumstances around the incident are currently unclear, and the Democratic Alliance (DA) Amajuba Constituency Head, Imran Keeka, said, “We have been reliably informed that the driver of the municipal vehicle that caused this unfortunate accident was able to escape the scene of the accident.”

The Amajuba District Municipality’s Communications Unit said that they have questioned the municipality employee in question. However, the man has been booked off sick by his medical practitioner since the day of the incident. The Municipality has also been receiving incomplete and unsatisfactory reports from him.

As a result, the District Municipality is conducting an internal investigation to establish what happened, and the Communications Unit said it was liaising with the SAPS during the investigation. The Amajuba Municipality has expressed its concern about the incident and acknowledged that it has hurt not only the families and community affected by the crash but also negatively impacted the Council and its Administration.

Following the tragic event, the Amajuba District Municipal Mayor, Ndabuko Zulu, and other officials, paid a visit to the Nyandeni family at Osizweni, where the surviving occupant of the vehicle is recovering. The visit was aimed at establishing the cause of the accident, as part of the Municipality’s investigation, and to provide support to Mr. Nyandeni, who sustained injuries and lost his vehicle and a close friend.

Mayor Zulu has committed to leaving no stone unturned to establish the real cause of the accident and to ensure that the employee is held accountable if found to have been at fault.
