Not even a month in his seat as the Amajuba District Municipality Deputy Mayor, Cllr Lihle Mthembu has found himself contending against a scam artist using his name to secure ill-gained monies.

The District Municipality’s Communications Unit explained, “It has come to the attention of the Amajuba District Municipality that there is a mischievous con artist impersonating the Deputy Mayor by utilising his cellphone number requesting monies in exchange for employment.”

Furthermore, the Cllr distanced himself from any criminal activities and acts of fraud that might have been committed by the perpetrators who hacked his number.

“Cllr Mthembu would like to commend those who have come forward with information and alerted his office of such activities, the Deputy Mayor has since blocked the number as an attempt to put an end to this criminal activity,” said the Amajuba District Municipality.

The Communications Unit further appealed to all individuals who may have fallen prey to these scammers to report the matter to the South African Police Services (SAPS).

“We also place emphasis that Municipal jobs are not for sale. The Municipality follows a fair and transparent recruitment process,” stressed the District Municipality’s Communication Unit.

The Amajuba District Municipality also emphasised that the public is warned against making payments in exchange for jobs as this qualifies as corruption. “Those found committing such a crime will have to face the wrath of the law and will be prosecuted.”
