An electrical outage in Ladysmith, KwaZulu-Natal, resulted in the Alfred Duma (Ladysmith) Municipality’s Electrical Department discovering a body in a substation.

The municipality’s Electrical Department discovered the man’s body in a mini-substation situated on Harry Gwala Street in Steadville, Ladysmith, on Sunday afternoon, 5 March 2023, after they went to locate a fault, due to certain areas in the vicinity of Steadville being left without electricity over the weekend.

Ladysmith SAPS Spokesperson Warrant Officer Basheer Khan explained that the SAPS received the phone call from the Department at approximately 2 pm on Sunday afternoon.

Law enforcement attended the scene, closing off the area to allow police to conduct the relevant investigations while removing the man’s body.

To date, the deceased man has not yet been identified. “Ladysmith Detectives are investigating an Inquest docket,” said Warrant Officer Khan, pointing out that a post-mortem is still pending to confirm the exact cause of death.
