Two brothers are in police custody following the kidnapping and murder of a Northern KwaZulu-Natal police officer.

Hawks spokesperson, Captain Simphiwe Mhlongo explained that their Pietermaritzburg branch worked with the Crime Intelligence unit and Ladysmith K9 division on the case. As a result, the two men were arrested on Monday, 27 February 2023.

Discussing the matter, Captain Mhlongo said that on 19 February 2023, the 39-year-old Sergeant Sandile Mgabhi was off duty, sitting with his friends when a quarrel between Mgabhi and his friend, Mduduzi Ndawonde allegedly broke out.

With the quarrel heating up, “Ndawonde and his brother, Muziwezinsizwa Ndawonde forcefully took Sergeant Mgabhi to an unknown place,” told Captain Mhlongo. Whereby he further said that “Mgabhi’s vehicle was found at a service station with blood stains.”

Sergeant Mgabhi’s lifeless body was, however, found two days later with a stab wound to the chest. A case of murder was reported at Colenso police station,

The two men briefly appeared in the Colenso Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 28 February 2023, and were remanded into custody. The case was postponed to 7 March 2023.
