A domestic shooting on Rider Haggard Avenue, Pioneer Park on Friday night, 24 February 2023, resulted in a local family being shattered.

This follows Newcastle police and emergency personnel being called out to a shooting on the Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal street

While an emergency medical services official explained that the matter was a domestic issue, an official police source pointed out that local law enforcement is investigating a case of murder, attempted murder, and a domestic violence-related inquest.

While circumstances surrounding the incident are unclear, the female resident of the household called her friends for assistance after shots were fired in her home.

“She mentioned that her son needed medical assistance urgently,” explained the police source.

Shortly afterward one of the woman’s friends arrived on the scene. The police source explained that the friend went to the home and found the woman’s young son lying on the floor between the TV room and the kitchen.

“She said that at that stage she could see the child was deceased and she closed his eyes,” added the police source.

It was at this stage that the friend asked the woman’s husband if he was okay, as he was acting “normally”. He apparently said he was fine and went into the lounge, where he proceeded to shoot himself.

At the time, the woman of the household was outside with another friend and according to the police source, she had sustained a gunshot wound to one of her shoulders.

Further police investigations are underway, affirmed the police.

Newcastillian News expresses its heartfelt condolences to the family.
