The Amajuba District Municipality was left without a Deputy Mayor at the start of February 2023, with the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) cutting ties with the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP). However, a new Deputy Mayor has been elected.
The Amajuba District Municipality elected Cllr Lihle Mthembu from the IFP as the new Deputy Mayor during the Municipality’s Council Meeting on Tuesday, 21 February 2023.
As Cllr Mthembu now prepares to take the mantle of Deputy Mayor, Amajuba District Municipality’s former Deputy Mayor, Cllr Sibusiso Sizani officially tendered his resignation after the EFF’s Julius Malema held a media briefing where he explained that his political party would be severing ties with the IFP and would now focus on initiating and supporting motions of no confidence in all IFP mayors in the municipalities in which they previously voted with them.
This impacted not only the Amajuba District Municipality but also Zululand, uThukela, Umkhanyakude and King Cetshwayo district municipalities.
The decision also saw various employees having to give up their positions at the Ulundi, Nongoma, Mtubatuba, uMhlathuze, Jozini, Dannhauser, Alfred Duma (Ladysmith), Nkosi Langalibalele (Estcourt), Abaqulusi (Vryheid), uPhongolo and Umhlabauyalingana local municipalities.
