A shoplifter was beaten to death in the Newcastle CBD on Sunday morning, 12 February 2023. This was after stealing two items from a local store, told Newcastle SAPS spokesperson, Lizzy Arumugam.

Taking place on Voortrekker Street at around 11:40 am, she further said, “It is alleged that the deceased stole a pack of sugar and liquid soap from a store in Scott Street.”

When he realised that he was being followed, Arumugam told that the shoplifter left the stolen goods at the entrance of the Newcastle Courts on Murchison Street, before running towards the Newcastle taxi rank.

However,  a security guard chased the man back towards Voortrekker Street. Once outside one of the businesses on the road, the deceased was assaulted by two men who hit him with a pipe and proceeded to kick him.

“The deceased sustained injuries to both his knuckles on his fist and an open wound on the left side of his face.”

Arumugam added that two suspects were arrested and the Newcastle SAPS detectives have opened a case of murder, with further investigations now underway.
