Mistakenly accused man barely escapes mob attack

What was meant to be a relaxing night with his girlfriend, turned out to be a traumatic event for a local man who nearly lost his life due to misdirected mob justice.

Newcastle SAPS spokesperson Lizzy Arumugam explained that the incident unfolded on 3 January 2023, when the man was walking through Section 7, Madadeni, KwaZulu-Natal.

While walking, Arumugam told that the man was accosted by a group of men. “One of the men accused him (the victim) of killing their brother.”

Before the man had time to respond, the mob began assaulting him with various weapons.

The man managed to escape with his life and reported the matter to the Madadeni SAPS. After this, the police located the group and took them into custody.

“The suspects were arrested, and further police investigations are underway,” confirmed Arumugam, who added that an attempted murder case has been opened.

However, while the perpetrators are now in police custody, residents are encouraged to avoid carrying out acts of mob justice as it could lead to the injury or death of innocent people.
