Accident at Gemsbok Avenue and Memel Road intersection

Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal Emergency Medical Services (EMS) rushed to the Gemsbok Avenue and Memel Road Intersection on Thursday morning, 18 January 2023, following reports of a motor vehicle accident.

With the incident occurring shortly before 8 am, Magenta Emergency Medical Service responded to assist the injured.

However, upon arrival, it was discovered that the accident was not serious. While the exact circumstances around the collision are unclear, Magenta EMS’s Charles Steyn explained that an SUV had rear-ended a bakkie.

No injuries were reported on the scene and investigations will now be conducted to establish precisely what transpired.

Reflecting on collisions in Newcastle, Steyn explained from his perspective, for a metro, there were not a lot of collisions in the area. But the most common vehicular accidents in town consisted of T-boning and head-on collisions, followed by incidents involving single vehicles where the motorist lost control of their car.

Looking at those that did occur in the town’s borders, he added, “Most accidents occur due to misjudgment of distance and speed.”

Therefore, motorists are encouraged to slow down and drive responsibly.
