Following the blistering heat, the South African Weather Service (SAWS) warned of severe thunderstorms destined for various Northern KwaZulu-Natal towns today.

“Scattered to widespread showers and thunderstorms are expected over KZN today (4 January 2023). Some of these thunderstorms are expected to become severe over western parts and the central interior of KZN.”

According to SAWS, these storms are expected to be accompanied by heavy downpours, strong damaging winds, hail, and excessive light.

With the weather service issuing a yellow level 2 warning, inclement weather can be expected between 1 pm and 11 pm.

Here are the towns predicted to be impacted:

  • Newcastle
  • Ladysmith
  • Bergville
  • Estcourt
  • Dannhauser
  • Utrecht
  • Dundee
  • Nquthu
  • Ulundi
  • Vryheid

All residents are therefore encouraged to be cautious as the storms could result in:

  • Localised flooding of settlements, low-lying roads, and bridges.
  • Localised damage to infrastructure.
  • Severe lightning which could possibly result in localised fire incidents and injuries to humans and livestock.
  • Difficult driving conditions which could lead to minor vehicle accidents.
