Riverbank River drown

Two Newcastle teenagers have died this week after drowning in the Ngagane River. According to police sources, the two youngsters both drowned on Tuesday, 13 December 2022.

One of the youngsters was a 17-year-old girl from Dicks Halt in Osizweni. She had allegedly decided to escape the heat and enjoy a quick swim in the Ngagane River. However, according to police sources, she was swept away by the current and subsequently drowned.

The second drowning took place in Madadeni after a 15-year-old girl drowned. Police officials explained that her clothing had been found on the side of the river with her school report.

“While there is a lot of speculation around her drowning, it cannot be confirmed as of yet what happened,” explained one official on the scene.

Madadeni SAPS spokesperson Constable Langa said the matter was reported to the local police. “However, her body is yet to be found.”

Moreover, as with the other teenager, Newcastle Search and Rescue continue to work extremely hard in the turbulent Ngagane River searching for the deceased.

Newcastillian News expresses its heartfelt condolences to the families of both teenagers.
