While South Africans endure endless power interruptions thanks to loadshedding, the residents of Dannhauser, Durnacol, and Emafusini must now also contend with water interruptions resulting from a problem only Eskom can fix.
On Thursday, 15 December 2022, the Amajuba District Municipality explained that its pumps at Chelmsford Raw Water Pump Station were not operating due to power challenges.
The Municipality has stated the fault has been reported to Eskom, however, “because of this fault, we currently have water supply interruptions at Dannhauser, Durnacol and Emafusini.”

While water tankers have been arranged to assist residents in the affected areas, the District Mayor Ndabuko Zulu and senior officials are conducting oversight visits in both the Dannhauser Municipality and eMadlageni Municipality (Utrecht), two towns plagued with continuous water interruptions.
According to the Communications Unit, Cllr Zulu intended to assess the full cause of the disruptions and lead the necessary interventions in both areas, ensuring residents have water again.
While the District Municipality attempts to resolve the matter, Eskom has stated that its technicians are also currently attending to a faulty transformer at Kilbarchan Substation, affecting supply to Ballangeich, Kilbarchan, Zamokuhle and part of Normandien.
While apologising for the inconvenience, the power utility said, “There is no estimated time of restoration.”
Therefore, parts of Northern KwaZulu-Natal now face water supply interruptions and even more power outages due to Eskom.
