Newcastle Municipality addresses traffic boom expected this week

With the SALGA Games set to bring thousands to Newcastle this week and the holiday season underway, the Newcastle Municipality affirmed that steps are being taken to address traffic concerns within the town.

As a result, the municipality’s communications unit explained that the main aim was to ensure that the community and motorists were in compliance with all road regulations.

Launching its Festive Season Road Safety Campaign with various partners, the goal during this time, according to the Newcastle Municipality, is road safety, especially since thousands of people will be flooding the Amajuba District for the SALGA KZNDSAC Games 2022 from the 8 -11 of December 2022.

Furthermore, while Newcastle Mayor, Cllr Xolani Dube appealed to the health and traffic departments to maximise their availability on local roads, Newcastle Deputy Mayor, Cllr Thwala, requested that traffic officers be deployed in all areas around Newcastle to regulate traffic.

With regard to the influx of taxis and buses, the Newcastle Municipality’s Communication Unit said, “Through the municipality’s traffic policing unit, the municipality will be constantly monitoring the compliance of taxi operators and other vehicles ferrying passengers.”
