Protestors burn debris on N11, near the ArcelorMittal Bridge

Several trucks and cars were found qued along the N11, near the ArcelorMittal Bridge, towards Volksrust on Thursday morning, 1 December 2022. This resulted in traffic coming to a grinding halt due to protestors burning debris across the highway.

The amped up crowd, who live along the road, were demanding that they receive electricity and running water.

However, the aggressive protestors were rapidly dispersed thanks to Newcastle SAPS rapidly deploying multiple officers to the scene. Through a strong police presence, the crowd of protestors found themselves forced to get out and off the road.

“The community involved in the protest began in the early hours of the morning, and while they seem determined, the police will be monitoring the situation throughout the day,” explained a police officer on the scene.

Police began clearing up the burned trash along the road, with traffic officials assisting with the traffic flow to ease the backlog of vehicles.

While the road is now open again, motorists are encouraged to practice caution travelling along the N11 as there is still debris on the side of the road, and it is unclear whether protestors will take up action again.
