A 39-year-old man has been sentenced to life imprisonment for breaking into his ex-girlfriend’s home and stabbing her to death.
National Prosecution Authority (NPA) Regional spokesperson Natasha Kara explained that the Estcourt Regional Court sentenced Khehla Majola to life imprisonment, with an additional eight years for the housebreaking and murder he committed in December 2021.
“Majola and the deceased, Phumzile Angelina Malinga, were in a romantic relationship. A few months prior to the murder, they had an altercation, where Majola assaulted Malinga with a bush knife and fled the area,” said Kara.
However, he returned for Malinga in December 2021, broke into her house during the night and stabbed her to death. Majola was arrested in January 2022, after Malinga’s family discovered he was hiding in a nearby area and alerted the police.
“In court, Regional Court Prosecutor Nokulunga Ngcobo led the evidence of Malinga’s brother who was the only witness. His evidence directly linked Majola to the murder. In his evidence, Malinga’s brother also told the court of the impact her death has had on their family. He said that his sister had died in his arms, and he is struggling to get those images out of his head,” stated Kara.
She added that Ngcobo also said that their mother has become mentally confused since Malinga’s death, and Malinga’s four-year-old daughter keeps asking for her mother.
Taking this all into consideration, Majola was sentenced to eight years imprisonment for housebreaking and life for murder.
“The National Prosecuting Authority welcomes the finalisation of this matter. Addressing the scourge of gender-based violence and femicide is one of our main priorities. We will continue to fight for justice for these victims. Well done to the Prosecutor and the Police on this successful prosecution,” concluded Kara.
