Using the advantage of people going to work, recently two thieves were caught in the act, thanks to a quick response from Newcastle law enforcement.

Situated near the town’s private school, on St Dominic Street—on Wednesday afternoon, 23 November 2022, Newcastle Crime Fighter Task Team’s Imran Ghafoor explained that the two men were spotted jumping into the property at approximately 1 pm.

Fortunately, a true Newcastillian spotted the individuals and immediately contacted law enforcement.

Within record time, the Newcastle PoliceNewcastle Crime Fighter Task Team, and the Newcastle Community Policing Forum (CPF) responded to the call, catching the two men red-handed, trying to steal a variety of the homeowner’s possessions.

While the two perpetrators are now in police custody, Ghafoor explained that incidents such as this are cause for concern in Newcastle.

“Homes are broken into during the day quite often, with the suspects taking advantage of the fact that the homeowners are usually at work, or are out shopping,” he explained.

While burglars are known for keeping a watchful eye over the houses they intend to break into, Ghafoor pointed out that these suspects have other methods to establish if a person is at home or not during the day.

“They will approach the gate and call out, seeing if anyone responds to them. If no one does, they will enter the yard and make double sure that no one is at home. Once they are certain, they will break into the home,” he elaborated.

As for burglars who opt to use the cover of darkness for their crimes, Ghafoor said that these culprits often break into houses from 1 am onwards, while people are in a deep sleep.

Focusing on burglaries that take place during the day, Ghafoor urged Newcastillians to take security seriously. “A person should have an alarm at their home and proper security. Also, lock your gate, as leaving it unlocked makes it easier for suspects to enter your yard.”

Residents are also urged to establish relationships with their neighbours, working together to keep an eye on their respective streets.

How is your neighbourhood? Has crime increased or do you feel safe?
