Newcastle’s roads see 2 crashes and 18 injured on Monday morning

A total of 18 people were injured on Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal‘s roads on Monday, 21 November 2022, following two crashes.

Looking at the first incident where 14 people were injured—a taxi driver lost control of his vehicle at the intersection of the N11 and Albert Wessels Drive at approximately 6 am.

A source on the scene explained, “The taxi driver was travelling on the N11 and wanted to turn onto Albert Wessels Drive. There were skid marks on the ground, and it is suspected that the taxi driver might have attempted to turn onto Albert Wessels Drive while travelling at a high speed.” 

However, the source did highlight that this could not be confirmed until investigations into the matter were concluded.

Furthermore, KwaZulu-Private Ambulance’s Chantell Botha explained that seven of the taxi’s occupants sustained serious injuries, while another seven sustained minor injuries.

The second crash on the N11, near the Iscor Bridge, saw a motor vehicle rear-ending another car. While the circumstances leading up to the collision are unclear at present, according to officials on the scene, two people sustained serious injuries, while two others escaped with minor injuries.

All were treated on scene by the attending paramedics, before being transported to hospital for further treatment.
