Repair work to a long-standing issue is underway in Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal, with the sewage line situated along Harding Street being tended to.
As reported by Newcastillian News in October 2022, Newcastle Municipality’s Cllr Faizel Cassim explained that the Municipality had consultants checking infrastructure in the said area and once the scope of the work was submitted, a contractor would be appointed to resolve the problem.
“We are hoping this project will be complete within the next two months, which will give residents the relief they have been longing for, for five to six years,” said Cllr Cassim at the time.

Speaking with Newcastillian News, the Newcastle Municipality’s Cllr Bertie Meiring said that he was pleased to see work underway. He explained that not only had the Municipality attended to a water line in Harding Street, which had impacted a nearby resident, but that the government entity was making headway in resolving the problematic sewage line.
“The contractor is also nearly finished with the new sewage line,” he said, further pointing out that the contractors were meticulously checking to see if there were any faulty sewage pipes or leaks, in order to resolve the problem.
Highlighting the fact that the contractor would be completing the task within the next few days, Cllr Meiring said, “Once the work has been completed, the pump station on Church Street will be turned on. I think, for those living in the area and for a lot of people in the CBD, this work will bring a lot of relief with the sewage being able to flow properly.”
As the age-old problem in Harding and Paterson Street is now being attended to, Cllr Meiring explained, “This is all due to a lack of budget and maintenance, but the Coalition-led Municipality is working hard on addressing these issues. Once the work is complete here, I intend to push for the sewage issues at the Newcastle Golf Club to be done.”
With Cllr Meiring stressing that the Newcastle Municipality was determined to resolve the problematic sewage issues, what are your thoughts on the above-mentioned?
