Osizweni father forces his son to drink poison

An Osizweni father is being charged with attempted murder, after forcing his child to drink poison.

The horrendous incident unfolded on Saturday, 1 October 2022, at approximately 4 pm, when the man’s girlfriend came to his house with a police officer for protection.

Allegedly, the woman wanted to leave her boyfriend but was nervous to collect her property on her own from his residence on Flathela Stand in Osizweni, KwaZulu-Natal.

However, when the woman and the police officer let the suspect know why they were there, he decided not to open the door but rather commit suicide and kill his son.

He went to the kitchen and mixed poison with amaHewu, a traditional non-alcoholic drink made from fermented mealie pap. The man then drank from it, before forcing his son to drink from the concoction.

Thanks to the quick-thinking police officer, the door was broken down and the child and father were rushed to a nearby clinic.

The child has since been admitted to the Newcastle Provincial Hospital, while Osizweni SAPS Spokesperson Captain Sipho Nkosi has confirmed the father is under police guard at Madadeni Regional Hospital.

Captain Nkosi further highlighted that there was still a certain degree of speculation around the case, while the police conducted further investigations.
