Preparations for the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) – KZN Department of Sports, Arts and Culture (SADC) Games, more commonly known as the SALGA Games, are in full swing.
On 1 September 2022, Newcastillian News reported that the Amajuba District Municipality was preparing for the large sporting event.
This monumental competition will see participants from the 61 KZN Municipalities descend on Newcastle, Utrecht and Dannhauser—with thousands of sporting enthusiasts in attendance.
In anticipation of the event, Newcastle Mayor, Cllr Xolani Dube hosted a Mayoral Cup tournament, from 24 September 2022 to 25 September 2022.
The two-day event featured action from various sporting codes, including rugby, netball, cricket, volleyball, golf and soccer. The tournament also served as the final selection process for the SALGA Games set for December, this year.

Speaking at the event, Newcastle Speaker of Council, Cllr Thengi Zulu said that the mayoral cup is not only an opportunity for youngsters to expose their talents, but it is also an opportunity to nurture holistic development as participants are challenged cognitively, socially, and physically.
“The objective of these games is to entertain, provide opportunities for self-expression, while teaching values and discipline, It has the capacity to touch the lives of all pupils participating, regardless of gender, language or social status,” Cllr Zulu highlighted.
Referring to the upcoming sporting tournament, Cllr Dube added, “The massive four-day SALGA Games sporting event will not only see a number of sports enthusiasts flocking into our town to share in the festivities, but it will also bring a positive injection into our local economy. This is in line with the 2035 vision and mission of the municipality, Newcastle is indeed on its way to becoming a vibrant metro.”

What a joke. This municipality is virtually bankrupt. No service delivery. No infrastructure replacement. No reprieve for CBD tax payers. Unnecessary spending. Before 2035 municipality will be under administration.
The Majuba District Municipality along with the Newcastle Municipality needs to come clean once and for all on the Old Casino/Iscor club sportfields and Kurt Rumelin stadium in Madadeni.
Councillors recieved massive kickbacks and Mr Vivian Reddy needs to restore the grounds to what they were, prior to them being handed over to him as the custodian of the Gambling License and his promise to the Local community thst the facilities would be upgraded to International standards!
Today they are ruins and shameful.
IFP and ANC councilors need to be held accountable for ruining the towns sporting facilities.
SALGA GAMES IS JUST WHITEWASHING SPORTING ISSUES IN A CITY OF OUR SIZE!
PLEASE REPLY.
“While 151 municipalities are teetering on the brink of collapse, 43 have already collapsed and require urgent intervention to rescue them” … National Treasury told Parliament on Wednesday. Yet there is money and time for 61 municipalities to enjoy these wastefull festivities, where performance is measured. How ironic ….?!?
