On Sunday night, 28 August 2022, just after the Elandslaagte turn-off, a few kilometres away from Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal, two vehicles collided on the N11 with six people narrowly avoiding serious injury or death.
One of the fortunate people walking away from the collision is the Amajuba Constituency Head for the Democratic Alliance, Imran Keeka, a well-known figure within the Newcastle community.
Discussing the collision, Keeka explained that the incident took place while he was travelling home from a trip to Cape Town. He had been travelling with two other people at the time.
“Traffic was heavy and there was a VW Polo that tried to overtake three trucks on a barrier line. I saw the car coming, and both myself and the other motorist tried to avoid each other.”

Thanks to some quick thinking from Keeka and the oncoming motorist, a head-on was avoided. Nevertheless, the cars sustained a substantial amount of damage in the process.
After the vehicles came to a standstill, Keeka explained that he immediately checked if the occupants in his car were uninjured. This was before making his way to check on the occupants of the VW Polo.
According to Keeka, when he got to the other vehicle, he noted that the three occupants had tossed empty alcohol bottles from their vehicle.
“They then called someone to fetch them, before leaving the scene prior to the police arriving on the scene,” said Keeka.
After the three occupants fled the scene, Keeka contacted the relevant authorities. He further explained, “The VW Polo was in the middle of the road, and to avoid another collision, I began diverting traffic.”
While police investigations into the collision are now underway, what are your thoughts on the above-mentioned?
