Estimated reading time: 2 minutes

The once placid town of Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal continues to see an increase in burglaries, with a recent household totally unaware as criminals navigated their home.

Newcastle Crime Fighter Task Team’s Imran Ghafoor explained that the house break-in on 28 July 2022, occurred while the homeowners slept between 2 am and 3 am. The team of criminals managed to silently gain access to the home through a window stealing a variety of items before making their escape.

While no one was hurt or restrained during the entire process, Ghafoor pointed out that the homeowner was totally unaware of what was going on in his home. Further adding that it was fortunate that no one was injured. “Only when he got up in the morning, did he see what had happened.”

Reporting the matter to the Newcastle SAPS, Ghafoor highlighted that law enforcement made a breakthrough in the case a few days later, with one of the men being arrested on Monday, 1 August 2022.

According to Ghafoor, the Amajuba Crime Intelligence received information about a man involved in the crime, in the Lennoxton area, a mere stone’s throw away from Fernwood. This led law enforcement to orchestrate an operation, with the team being cautioned that the man was allegedly armed with a gun.

As a result, law enforcement managed to catch the perpetrator who was totally unaware. Ghafoor said it should be noted that the man’s firearm was in fact a toy, allegedly meant to strike fear into any unsuspecting victims.

With the man now in police custody, Ghafoor stressed, “The IO (Investigating Officer) will now establish how many other suspects were involved in the house break-in.”

If you have any information regarding these criminals do the right thing and contact the SAPS.

  1. I applaud the SAPS team for their swift action in apprehending the suspect. I live in suryaville and I feel unsafe at times for there is a lot of strangers frequenting the complex I live in.
