Another Northern KwaZulu-Natal political figure has escaped a violent end. This time, the target was the Okhahlamba (Bergville) Municipality’s Mayor, Cllr Vikizitha Mlotshwa.
According to the Municipality’s Communications Unit, Cllr Mlotshwa had been travelling home along the R600 on Sunday night, 31 July 2022, when the shooting took place. Allegedly three men ambushed the mayor’s vehicle with a shootout breaking out between the men and Cllr Mlotshwa’s bodyguards.
During the shootout, the three would-be hit men were wounded and taken into police custody shortly afterwards. Unfortunately, one of the Bergville Mayor’s bodyguards was wounded.
“He is in a stable condition and recovering in Ladysmith Hospital,” said the Communications Unit. They further affirmed that Cllr Mlotshwa escaped the incident unscathed.
While further police investigations are underway, this was the second case of political violence in the span of a week.
Cllr Mbatha was shot in the cheek, with the bullet exiting the back of his neck. As police investigations into this matter are still ongoing, Osizweni SAPS spokesperson, Captain Sipho Nkosi pointed out that the SAPS suspected the shooting was politically motivated.
