K9 Unit stops vehicle transporting explosives on Albert Wessels Drive, Newcastle

Adding to the various bombs being seized around KwaZulu-Natal of late, creating a worrisome future—on Friday, 29 July 2022, the Newcastle K9 Unit discovered a vehicle transporting explosives in Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal.

According to Newcastle SAPS spokesperson, Lizzy Arumugam, the K9 Unit was patrolling Albert Wessels Drive, when they received information that a vehicle was travelling from Madadeni to Newcastle with explosives.

Responding to the information, the K9 Unit eventually spotted the said car and pulled it over. Upon searching the vehicle, Arumugam highlighted that the officers found both explosives and detonators hidden in the car. “Two suspects were then arrested and taken into custody.”

At present, it cannot be confirmed what the explosives were meant for. However, Arumugam stressed that a full police investigation is currently underway.
