KZN home transformed into a gut-wrenching crime scene

The lives of a 35-year-old woman, her 65-year-old mother, and her seven-year-old daughter were horrifically snuffed out on 27 June 2022. Their house in Sobantu, outside Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal transformed from a home into a gut-wrenching crime scene.

To make matters worse, the 29-year-old man had slept with the woman just hours prior to savagely killing her and her mother. Afterwhich, he turned his focus on the woman’s seven her old daughter—raping and killing her.

Providing further insight, the KZN Regional spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority, Natasha Kara, began by stating that on Thursday, 21 July 2022, the Pietermaritzburg High Court sentenced the 29-year-old Njabulo Ndlovu to five terms of life imprisonment for three counts of murder and two counts of rape. “Ndlovu pleaded guilty to these charges last week, before the same court,” added Kara.

Elaborating on the crime, Kara explained that in his plea, Ndlovu said that he went with his friends to the house of the three deceased.

“There they drank beer with the older women of the house. At some stage his friends left, and he had consensual sex with the child’s mother, and they fell asleep. During the night, the child’s granny woke up and asked him to leave, threatening to hurt him with a knife.”

The two struggled with the knife, and after dispossessing her of the knife, he decided to kill her. He strangled her and further stabbed her in her neck and above her eye.

The younger woman then woke up, asking him what had happened. This led to the two fighting with each other, and Ndlovu making the decision to kill her as well.

“He said that he was still naked (from the consensual sex) when the 7-year-old walked into the room. She began to scream, so he grabbed her and strangled her. He then raped her twice before strangling her again to make certain she was dead,” Kara continued.

By this time, there was a commotion outside the house, so Ndlovu got dressed and fled the scene. However, he was arrested later that day.

In aggravation of sentence, Senior State Advocate Candy Kander told the court that Ndlovu is a calculated murderer, who ruined an entire family.

She said he could have at any point left the situation, but he stayed until he had killed them all.

Kander also handed in Victim Impact Statements facilitated by Court Preparation Officer Nadi Mofokeng and compiled by a family member, a community member and the child’s teacher.

Kara highlighted, “All their statements spoke of a happy family who were community orientated. The child’s teacher said that the child was a happy and hopeful child who brightened the lives of all she came into contact with.”

In sentencing Ndlovu, the court ruled that his name must be entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders. A further ruling is that the Department of Correctional Services must contact the family of the deceased before he is considered for parole.

“The National Prosecuting Authority welcomes the swift finalisation of this matter. We hope that the family members are able to find peace and a sense that justice has been served,” Kara concluded.
