A security guard at the Forderville Pump Station in Estcourt was shot and killed during the early hours of Thursday morning, 14 July 2022.

The uThukela District Municipality’s Communications Unit explained that the security guard, Veli Mdlolo, was accosted by unknown suspects while he was performing his duties at the pump station on Canna Avenue, Estcourt. As a result, the assailants proceeded to open fire on the unsuspecting person.

Despite being taken to a medical facility, the security guard later passed away, after succumbing to his injuries.

According to the District Municipality, the motive for the murder is unclear, with the uThukela District Municipality urging the affected parties to remain calm, and allow the law to take its course.

“It is therefore our hope that the police will leave no stone unturned to find the perpetrators of such heinous crime and bring them before justice,” said the District Municipality’s Communications Unit.

Following the incident, uThukela DA Councillor, Cllr Thys Janse van Rensburg stated that the DA in the region was calling on the uThukela District to increase security at all bulk water infrastructure with immediate effect.

At the time, he explained, “uThukela District Municipality has experienced a series of incidents considered mysterious and that have led to water shortages in areas like Ezakheni, Steadville, St Chads, Acaciavale, Steadville, Acaciaville, Mathondwane, Emgazini, Watersmeet, Roosboom, Estcourt, and many more were affected by this malicious act.
