Traffic cop asks for R10 000 bribe for “fraudulent license disk”

A traffic officer faces jail time, after attempting to obtain an enormous bribe from a motorist for a “creative offence”.

The spokesperson for the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (the Hawks), Captain Simphiwe Mhlongo explained that the traffic officer in question, Dumisani Mchunu, was officially sentenced by the Greytown Regional Court on Tuesday, 28 June 2022.

Embellishing on the case, Captain Mhlongo explained, “Mchunu demanded R10 000 gratification after he claimed the license disc of the complainant’s vehicle was fraudulent. The complainant reported the matter to the Hawks from the Durban Serious Crime Investigation and an undercover operation was conducted on 3 March 2022.”

Working for the Umvoti (Greytown) Municipality, Mchunu found himself arrested at his place of employment and charged with corruption.

Captain Mhlongo added that the traffic officer appeared in court several times, before finally being convicted on Tuesday.

“He was sentenced to four years imprisonment, of which half of the sentence will be served under correctional supervision,” concluded Captain Mhlongo.
