Following a horrific head-on collision on the R34, five people died on Sunday night, 26 June 2022. This is according to Craig Botha of KwaZulu Private Ambulance.

Botha further explained that the incident involving a bakkie and car, took place on the R34 Melmoth Road, between the Mondlo (in Vryheid) and Klipfontein turn-offs.

Sadly, five occupants in the car sustained fatal injuries and died before paramedics arrived on the scene. One person from the bakkie sustained serious injuries. “The patient was treated on the scene before being transported to hospital for further treatment,” said Botha.

According to a source on the scene, the collision allegedly occurred after the car came around a bend and then attempted to overtake another vehicle. “While there is a lot of speculation around the collision, it was said that while the car was allegedly overtaking another vehicle, it collided with the bakkie,” said the source.
