Amersfoort SAPS, in conjunction with the Volksrust and Wakkerstroom SAPS, arrested a 29-year-old man, wanted for the murder of his 34-year-old girlfriend, Nomalanga Zwane.

Police spokesperson, Brigadier Selvy Mohlala explained that Shabangu murdered Zwane during the early hours of 6 June 2022. While in the act of murdering his girlfriend, Shabangu also assaulted her brother, who tried to save her during the attack.

“Thereafter it is said that he fled the scene, allegedly with Zwane’s cell phone, as well as that of the brother he allegedly assaulted,” explained Brigadier Mohlala.

With investigators working tirelessly to track down the suspect, Brigadier Mohlala pointed out that Amersfoort Police eventually made a breakthrough on Saturday, 18 June 2022. He said police were notified by citizens who had seen Shabangu hitchhiking from Piet Retief towards Wakkerstroom.

“Police acted swiftly, where they summoned assistance from their counterparts in Wakkerstroom and Volksrust, with a clear description of the car he was reportedly in. They intercepted the car matching the description as provided,” told Brigadier Mohlala.

However, upon seeing the police, the suspect exited the vehicle and tried to run. But this proved to be a futile attempt with the officers managing to apprehend Shabangu before he could get far.

Subsequent to his arrest and being charged, he was taken to court and made his first appearance at the Amersfoort Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 20 June 2022.

Brigadier Mohlala pointed out that Shabangu’s case was postponed to 20 July 2022 for legal representation. Meanwhile, he will remain in custody until then.
