A local family from Lister Farm found themselves the proud owners of a brand-new home, thanks to the Newcastle Municipality.

Despite facing a certain degree of financial challenges, the Northern KwaZulu-Natal-based government entity reached out to a family in dire need of assistance, the Mpungose family.

According to the Newcastle Municipality Communications Unit, the family’s plight was brought to the attention of the former Ward 6 councillor, after it emerged that the family’s previous dilapidated tin house was falling apart.

“The previous and current ward councillor, Cllr Hlatshwayo, took it upon themselves to make this household a pressing priority which required an immediate response,” the Communications Unit explained.

The municipality went on to say that due to the immense effort shown by the councillors, Newcastle Mayor, Cllr Xolani Dube worked hard to assist in putting a roof over the youth-led household, this past Youth Day. “The recipient, a young mother of two, was abandoned by her family after her mother passed away. Without a proper shelter, she was forced to fend for herself,” added the Communications Unit.

Receiving the house on Thursday, 16 June 2022, the young woman was joined by Newcastle Speaker of Council Cllr Thengi Zulu who officiated the handover ceremony.

Furthermore, Cllr Dube praised the partnership and efforts of the councillor. Additionally, thanking the councillor for displaying profound leadership.

“We can comfortably say that we are on the right track. Ours is to make sure that the youth of Newcastle are alleviated from the shackles of hopelessness and poverty. I’m delighted that on this day, which also happens to be my birthday, I’ve witnessed what good leadership means,” stated Mayor Dube.

The family was also handed groceries to see them through for a good many days to come. The Newcastle mayor also promised to deliver brand new furniture to the Mpungose family this coming Friday, 24 June 2022.
