A security guard was shot and killed by police officers on Saturday, 11 September 2021. After he attempted to resist arrest, opening fire on the police.

KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Spokesperson Brigadier Jay Naicker explains that the shootout between the man and the police comes after the security guard embarked on a murderous rampage.

He said that on Saturday morning, the 26-year-old suspect shot and killed his 40-year-old colleague at New Formosa in Estcourt. “The victim sustained gunshot wounds to the head and his body was dumped in the veld where police later found it.”

Following the initial murder, the security guard went to a farm in Mooi River, killing another security guard.

Sadly, the killing spree did not end there, with the suspect proceeding to travel to Bruntville in Mooi River. Once there, he shot and killed his ex-girlfriend’s 34-year-old sister and three children aged between 5 and 13.

Brigadier Naicker added, “After fleeing the scene, he went to his ex-girlfriend’s place of employment on Alexandra Terrace, where he fired several shots at the woman and bolted. The victim was conveyed to hospital where she remains in a critical condition.”

The suspect fled the scene towards Kranskop, where police officers intercepted him. He resisted arrest and opened fire at the police officers. “The suspect was fatally wounded in the ensuing shootout. Police are investigating six counts of murder, one count of attempted murder, and an inquest across three districts in KwaZulu-Natal,” Brigadier Naicker concluded.
