With the up and coming elections just around the corner, it would appear the ANC is shuffling the deck, as their current mayoral stock across multiple Northern KwaZulu-Natal towns appears to be dealing in legal battles.

As a result thereof, Newcastle Municipality Mayor, Cllr Dr Ntuthuko Mahlaba, has been removed from the African National Congress’ (ANC) candidate list for the upcoming local government elections.

This comes after a media briefing by the ANC’s Deputy Secretary-General, Jessie Duarte, on Monday, 23 August 2021.

During the briefing, Duarte noted, “The mayor of Newcastle has been removed, who has to step aside. There is also a few other people who were removed from the list. Only people who appeared in a court of law were removed. A mayor that was arrested apparently today (Monday) was not on the list.”

The Newcastle Mayor is currently facing several charges, including theft, assault, and malicious damage to property.

It is alleged that on 3 September 2020, employees from a subcontractor in Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal, were assaulted by Njabulo Mabaso, Sgananda Shezi, and the Mayor, Dr Mahlaba.

The three men were summoned to appear in court on 26 July 2021, where they were charged for assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm, malicious damage to property and theft. Following this, the mayor and his co-accused appeared in court again on 16 August 2021, where the case was remanded until this week.

While Cllr Mahlaba has been removed from the political party’s candidate list, he is not the only mayor in KZN who has been affected by the decision to remove individuals who have appeared in Court.

Nkangala mayor Thembi Sarah Masilela was also removed after she appeared along with nine suspects in the Middelburg Magistrate’s Court on fraud and theft charges, while the ANC was concluding the lists for submission to the IEC.

In addition, the mayor of the Alfred Duma Municipality in Ladysmith, Vincent Mayiboyi Madlala, has appeared in the Ezakheni District Court on 2 August 2021 with his daughter, Sanelisiwe Sinazo Madlala. The duo face charges of Unlawful Possession of Firearms, while Madlala faces an additional charge of Defeating/Obstructing the Administration of Justice.

With these challenges on the ANC’s plate leading up to elections, what are your thoughts?
