A sense of festivity prevailed over this week, with Newcastillians celebrating the Christmas period with friends and family. Yet, the festive season has not been without its sense of tragedy.

On Monday, December 23, four men were arrested by members from Operation Fiela, which were attached to the Amajuba Cluster SAPS, Newcastle Public Order Police and Osizweni SAPS.

The four men were arrested for the illegal possession of four firearms. Three of the men were also charged for the attempted murder of a 40-year-old man.

Newcastle SAPS Spokesperson, Captain Jabulani Ncube, explains the suspects had ambushed the victim along the Iscor Road, shooting 18 rounds. The victim was shot seven times in the body.

The suspects’ vehicle has also been seized and investigations into the matter continue, as the motive for the crime is unknown.

Amajuba Acting Cluster Commander Brigadier Sumayela commended the police officials for their dedication in ensuring the perpetrators were brought to book.

In a separate incident, one person was been killed and four others injured after the vehicle they were travelling in overturned on Albert Wessels Drive near Formosa on Tuesday afternoon, December 24.

The vehicle, which was believed to be travelling towards Madadeni, overturned and one occupant was flung through the air several meters. Unfortunately, there was nothing paramedics could do for him and he was declared dead on the scene.

A woman, baby and two others sustained moderate injuries and were taken to a local hospital for further care.

The exact cause of the accident is still unknown and will be investigated by the SAPS
