St Dominics Newcastle’s tennis courts were a hive of activity on Saturday, May 11, with the Moteko Tournament. An annual event which sees up and coming tennis players putting their skills to the test.
Organised by Johnny Msiminga, a tennis coach at St Dominics Newcastle, the tournament saw 26 children from various schools, including St Dominics Newcastle, Drakensberg Primary and Huttenpark Primary School participate.
The event was divided into three divisions, namely the Red Ball (beginner), Orange Ball (intermediate) and Green Ball (advanced).
“This is the second year we have hosted the tournament and it has grown substantially since we first held it last year,” says Msimanga.
He explains the purpose of the tournament is to introduce children to competitive tennis tournaments from an early age.
The winners for the Red Ball code are as follows:
In the girl division, Lillian Ntwiga took first place, with Rummaana Seedat following in second.
Anderson Hsu clinched first place in the boy’s division, while Kayden Forbes came in second place.
In the Orange Ball division, Jane and Robyn Gluts took first and second place respectively in the girl’s division. J.J. Msimanga took first place in the boy’s division.
In the Green Ball Division, the winner in the boy’s division goes to Soren Peterson, with Ethan Reineke in second position.
Senamile Sithebe and Londeka Mthethwa took first and second place respectively in the girl’s division.
Well done to all the players for excelling in the Moteko Tournament and proving their worth on the tennis courts.
